Over 50 years of dedication, built on family tradition and trusted service
Woods Trade Supplies began its journey in 1969 as L.G. Wood & Son, founded from the family home in Sandown by Dave Wood and his father Len Wood. Having just completed his plumbing apprenticeship, Dave joined his father who had over 23 years of experience to establish their own plumbing and heating business.
What started at the kitchen table quickly grew, and by the early 1970s the company had moved into its first premises on George Street, as demand for modern central heating systems increased across the Island. A major turning point came when the business secured a Southern Gas Board contract, leading to rapid expansion from just three fitters to 28 in only a few years.
During this busy period, the idea to sell surplus stock led to the beginnings of a retail operation, which steadily developed into what is now known as Woods Trade Supplies. The company continued to grow throughout the 1970s and 1980s, relocating to larger premises before establishing its base in Shanklin and expanding further with branches in Ryde and Newport, Isle of Wight.
Over time, Dave’s wife Jenny became a partner in the business, and their children Darren, Adam, and Donna all became involved, continuing the strong family tradition. Woods evolved into a trusted supplier of plumbing and bathroom products, combining expert knowledge with a commitment to service, innovation, and reliability.
In 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic arrived, Dave and Jenny made the decision to retire after decades of dedication, leaving the business in the hands of the next generation.
Today, Woods Trade Supplies remains proudly family-run, employing a dedicated team of people across its Island branches and continuing to serve both trade and retail customers with the same values of quality, service, and trust that have been at its core since 1969.
